]]><![CDATA[Spintech Sportsman 3000XL for the Cup Car]]>Thu, 20 Jul 2017 23:20:47 GMThttp://www.944turbo.com/blog/spintech-sportsman-3000xl-for-the-cup-carAs purchased, my Cup replica had a 3" exhaust (straight pipe as it is a track-only car).  It is LOUD.  Very.  Loud.  Had to take it down a notch...

One of my goals is to move it back to the street, and that will take some pulling it back from the edge of full-race mode.  Eventually, a high-flow catalytic converter, lightweight carpet, among a massive laundry list of items will help bring this back to be (somewhat) comfortable on the street.  Think more GT3...  think 944 Turbo Cup "reimagined". 

I am already around very loud noises all day, every day.  To tone her down a bit, I researched, researched, and researched mufflers for the Cup which would not completely kill the deep sound or end up sounding like a Civic.  I reached back to my college days, where one of my close friends built his LT1 Camaro into a monster, and opted for Spintech.  I have watched Spintech over the years grow into quite a successful exhaust company (subsidiary of a larger metalworks company).  I decided to finally (after first finding them in 2003, FOURTEEN YEARS AGO) go with Spintech!

I just received my new Sportsman 3000XL in the mail.  I had to remove about 3 inches of the exhaust pipe towards the rear, but other than that the install was pretty easy.  The exhaust was fitted together with heavy torque clamps. but I still managed to break one lose.  One replacement on the way.

Here is a video of the Spintech Sportsman 3000XL on the 2.5L 944 Turbo Cup.  As always, cell phone video sound is not the best representation of actual sound, but it's pretty good.
]]><![CDATA[Bimarco FIA Seats for the Cup car]]>Thu, 20 Jul 2017 23:14:33 GMThttp://www.944turbo.com/blog/bimarco-fia-seats-for-the-cup-carAfter much deliberation, I decided to give the comparatively inexpensive Bimarco FIA racing seats a shot for the Cup car.  I am still waiting on my seat brackets and possibly sliders from Wedge Brackets, however, I wanted to post a picture of the seat.  I went with one seat for now, to check the quality/build/comfort/value of the seat before purchasing the passenger seat.

For around $400 shipped, they even put the Porsche crest on the headrest.  Of note, it looks a bit lop-sided, however, that is imply because the picture was offset.  It is straight!

THESE WHEELS ARE USED, and have been used on the track. As such, they were imperfect with several scratches. I have sanded and polished the outer lips to a "brushed" or "anodized" look finish. NOTE: During that process, I removed the inners, and painted in flat-black. I did NOT separate the rims, and the silicon seal is completely intact. I was able to clean up a lot of the imperfections, but they are still not show quality. 

If you purchase, please check all bolts are torqued to 16 ft/#s -- I did this during the rebuild, however, it is highly suggested to re-check all torque settings after a few miles of driving on them. Since they do not have tires, I cannot re-check these for you. Buyer beware -- check and re-check the 16 ft/# M6 Kinesis recommended torque setting for all bolts!

]]><![CDATA[18" Kinesis K29 refinishing]]>Sun, 13 Nov 2016 19:37:29 GMThttp://www.944turbo.com/blog/18-kinesis-k29-refinishingWhen I purchased the Cup car, it came with the Kinesis K29s that were on it, and an extra set that had some old Falken slicks.  I took them down to the local tire shop and had the tires removed and disposed of ($30).

Now what?

I have been brainstorming refinishing ideas for these wheels, as they are incredible wheels -- both in looks and performance/quality.  They are super-lightweight aluminum wheels which would cost over $4,000 new.  I decided to refinish them in the "look" of the classic Fuch wheels (my personal favorite Porsche wheel), with a satin black center and an anodized outer lip.  Depending upon my resources in the area, I may or may not be able to get them anodized.  Regardless, I took them apart to be able to clean and refinish them properly.
I "borrowed" my wife's oven to cue the wheels.  After baking them at 170F for about 20 mins, they seemed well on their way to cured.  

​NOTE:  After reading up on oven-baking to cue paint, there are many different opinions and techniques for this.  Depending upon what paint you purchase, oven-curing may not be necessary and in some cases may be detrimental to the paint you just applied.

One of the first things I'm going to do is strip it down and paint it, and I am like my wife picking out tile for the bathroom -- I can't decide on a damn color.

I keep coming back to the color of the 911 Sport Classic.  I want something retro, a nod to the '70s and '80s.

Not sure what the color code is, but it's gorgeous.

I'd probably keep the subtle racing stripes down the middle.

Then I saw this the other day.  A little "wild" but a great looking color...

So first thing is paint.  Next thing will be the RS style carpet, a little lightweight sound deadening, but also with some bare interior for a nice offset of color.  

End goal?  A trackable street car vice the full up race car it is now.  Mechanically, the previous owner built a 944 Turbo Cup to stock specs, down to the magnesium intake manifold.  I am not going to modify the engine at all, the only thing I will do is tone-down the exhaust (completely open).
